@starsplat took this cosplay and used it as a way to discuss some really important things. She took being a Chinese-Maltese girl in America and used her family as inspiration for this beautiful costume. She took Maltese themes from her mothers side of the family through the integration of jewelry and trims. On her fathers side she took inspiration from his family in China. Including fabric choice such as silk and brocade, and the personally designed patterns that each Swarovski gem wove into and so much more. For this costume Star and her dad scoured the streets of Shanghai for the perfect turquoise chopsticks to fit in her hair and on the garment. And with her mother had her choose the earrings. Dangling on her hips are loops of keys and locks from each home that her family had lived in: from Melbourne, Australia (her birthplace) to several places in Maryland and New Jersey. Each part of this costume is laden with sentimental and significant materials for Star. She is proud to be able to weave parts of her mixed immigrant identity with such a creatively rigorous project. -
